One of the things I've noticed in my writing is that people don't do much. Most of what I write are conversations. The conversations spark action, or reveal the action that was taken, but for the most part I skip the action. Can't say I'm particularly fond of that tendency. How can you tell the difference between demand resistance and enforcing boundaries?

I assume by now most of all y'all have read how Ursula is sick of Fantasyland.

But my question is, what gives a place in a story a "sense of place"? how do we, as writers, avoid what Ursula is complaining about1? Having more kind of birds than just corvids and vultures? A field of bluebells in the middle of a moss-hung forest? Is that really ( Read more... )
